LLMs for linguistic research: opportunities and pitfalls

The CL tutorial at DGfS 2024 focuses on the opportunities and pitfalls of using Large Language Models (LLMs) in linguistic research. The participants will be introduced to the core architecture and properties of generative language models as well as the linguistic capabilities of LLMs. In addition to that, we will shed light on the related field of prompt engineering. In the second part of the tutorial, participants will get a chance to experiment with an LLM on a number of linguistic tasks using a Python API.

The hands-on component of the course does not require in-depth knowledge of programming, but some preliminary experience with Python and Jupyter Notebooks can be helpful.
